STUDENT PLACEMENT IN ENGLISH COURSES
Students are admitted to the ABP based on scores from either the Internet based TOEFL or the IELTS. Once admitted, the ABP will administer an Accuplacer test and a writing sample to aid in their placement in the ABP English courses. Courses focused on the English language comprise approximately half of all courses offered at the ABP. The English Department is divided into a Foundations program and an Academic program.
FOUNDATIONS PROGRAM
Students in the Foundations program receive twelve hours of intensive English instruction per week. The courses include Grammar, Reading Skills, Writing, and Extensive Reading. In addition to improving their English language skills, students will learn to handle multiple assignments and develop their time management and study skills. The goal of the program is to develop the students' English language proficiency so that they can function independently in a university setting.
ACADEMIC ENGLISH PROGRAM
Students who place at the top level of our assessment tests enroll in two Academic English classes each semester. The main objective of these classes is to prepare students for success in the university. Emphasis is placed on writing and reading assignments that are challenging and incorporate critical thinking skills. The textbooks adopted for these classes are used in regular university settings and are not EFL texts. Even though the classes are challenging, the instructors of the Academic English classes understand the needs of EFL students as well as the requirements placed on students in higher education settings. Instruction is presented in a step-by-step fashion that allows students to bridge the gap between high school and college.
ABP Academic English Students - Cross-Registration Option
A special opportunity is offered to selected students in the Academic English Program. They may enroll in one or two Education City university classes and receive academic credit for these classes. If students are enrolled in a university class they are exempt from the corresponding ABP class.
