The ABP science curriculum was designed to emphasize the development of skills in reading, literal comprehension, fluency, vocabulary development, critical thinking skills and skills in application of knowledge and experimental design, It also enhances the skills, attitudes and behavior needed for academic success and to enable students to reach sufficient language proficiency to gain admission to university programs. The science faculty believes that these skills are the integral skills for all science courses.

There are several science course choices available for ABP students. A student is placed in a science class based on the student's English language level, career interests of the student, and the student's preference. It is the mission of all science instruction to assist students to develop the skills and work habits that will enable them to be accepted into an English speaking university. And even more importantly, we want our students to be successful once they enter a university.

The Science Department has a Foundations program and an Academic program.

FOUNDATIONS PROGRAM

The Foundations program offers two courses: SC 101 Science Language and Skills in Semester 1 and SC 102 Science Language and Skills in Semester 2. These are integrated class and laboratory courses, designed for the foundation level student. They explore the general principles of science using English-language terminology. Emphasis is placed on the development of English language terminology, development of proficiency in laboratory skills, and the development of a more independent learning style for students. Reading and writing skills and concepts play particular importance in the daily class activities. Of particular importance is the integration of English vocabulary with an investigative, hands-on style of learning.

ACADEMIC SCIENCE PROGRAM

There are several science course choices available for ABP students who qualify for the academic program. Academic students who do not wish to pursue a career in a science related major take the courses in Integrated Science in Semester 1 and 2.

These are integrated class and laboratory courses that are designed for the non-science major. They explore the general principles of science using English-language terminology at the pre-university level. Emphasis is placed on the development of more sophisticated English language terminology, more advanced writing, development of advanced proficiency in laboratory skills, of critical thinking, independent research skill, and the development of a more independent style of learning.

Academic students who wish to pursue a science related career can take courses in Biology. These are integrated classroom and laboratory course that explores the basic properties of the nature of living organisms and are designed to develop greater competency in the methods of scientific investigation. Students may also take courses in Chemistry, which are integrated class and laboratory courses that explores the basic properties of the nature and reactions of matter using English-language terminology

Cross-Registration Option

A special opportunity is offered to selected students who are taking an academic science subject. They may enroll in one Education City university Science course, if it is on offer, and receive academic credit for these classes. Students enrolled in a university science course are exempt from the corresponding ABP course.
