Doha 16 September 2007 -For five students at the Academic Bridge Program the 2007/2008 academic year has brought additional responsibilities. They have just been elected leaders of the Academic Bridge Program's Student's Association. All 200 students voted in the election which is held in the second week of the academic year.
The elections are a free and democratic process and the students are free to run their campaigns as they wish. This year the students witnessed some fierce campaigning across various media. Publicity materials and campaign tools included posters, leaflets, speeches and even floor signs - all designed to catch the attention, and support, of passing voters.
These newly elected officers will have important roles to play over this academic year. The association represents students at the Academic Bridge Program board meetings and also helps students in organizing academic, cultural and entertainment events. It has a further, very vital role in helping to resolve students' problems.
Dr.Miles Lovelace, Director of the Academic Bridge Program, treated the winners to lunch and then invited them his office. He congratulated them and discussed with them methods for assisting communication between students, faculty and administration. He also stressed to them not to neglect their education either and to work hard toward a successful future. Speaking of the importance of the Student association, Dr Miles Lovelace said: "The Student Association is an important part of life at the Academic Bridge Program. In resolving student problems and contributing to dialogue, theStudent Association enables the students to concentrate on study, and yet be represented in important discussions. The Student Union also contributes to the student's co-curricular lifeby helping to organize events and activities."
