The ABP was established in 2001 to provide Qatari high school graduates of good ability with a one year foundation program to prepare for an English language university education. Students must complete an intensive program in English, science, math, and computer skills combined with Improving their time management, test taking, and study skills.  Additionally, the ABP program is coeducational which provides students the experience of learning and studying in a mixed community. Many additional clubs and activities are offered to enrich the learning environment, along with student government and sports teams.

Since 2001 more than 2000 students (mostly Qatari high school graduates, but also students from over 30 other countries) have completed the ABP program. Many have enrolled at one of the Education City universities, Qatar University, or universities in the USA or UK. Some have taken jobs or entered the military or the national police force or private employment and entered universities later on. Over 80% eventually enter universities.

Admission to the ABP is competitive, and the preferred requirements are an IELTS of 5 or higher (4.5 minimum), a high school average of 80% or higher (75% minimum), and completion of 12 years of schooling or the national high school diploma of their country or school. Most students obtain a government scholarship or private sponsor for the QR 90,000 sponsored student annual fees, but some students pay their fees privately (which are less).

Classes are conducted Sunday-Thursday from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm for 32 weeks, usually beginning in mid-August. Students are in classes approximately 22 hours weekly.  Only full-time enrollment is permitted. The faculty and staff are composed of 65 highly trained and experienced teachers and support staff coming for 20 countries, with nearly all teachers having graduate degrees and on average 15-20 years of experience.

Applications should be submitted in April for early admission in the following school year or in November for January entry.
